Los Nubas son una tribu nilótica que habita en el centro sur de Sudán, a 700 kilómetros de la capital Khartoum. La guerra civil que se libra en el país desde 1985 está llevando al exterminio a la población católica y animista del sur.
Antonio Cores Uría inició en 1975 un viaje consu familia que le llevó desdeAlejandría a las fuentes del Nilo. Fue casi una década de convivencia con las tribus Dinka, Anouak, Murile, Tapoza, Nuer, Azande y Nuba. De los años pasados con esta última son testimonio las fotografías de esta exposición.

Pintura" covers the rituals of body painting in which the Nubas participated in preparations for the "Lucha" or the fighting.

The "Lucha" or The fights among the Nuba are big celebrations. They happen after the harvest and before the rainy season. A messenger runs from village to village, it will take him days, announcing the place and day of the wresting contest. Hundreds of warriors and women from different Nuba villages gather in the specified location.

DANCES In the dance rite the young girls dance around the hut with sensuous movements. Inside the hut the warriors sit with their sticks in a concentrated attitude. They do not look at the women outside. From time to time a young girl enters the hut, chooses the male of her preference and rides him with her thigh on his shoulder and her whole body vibrates for a few seconds.The male then comes out of the hut and with spastic movements hurls out screams of power. As the rite goes on the males reach an ecstatic trance through which they connect to invisible forces that give them the strength and determination for future endeavors. The young girls have established their preferences. However the males will still need to prove their courage in future fights.

Currently Antonio is scanning & archiving about 2700 slides that he took while in Sudan. Afterwards he will start working on some kind of video or documentary based on the text you can find in the web in the section "The Journey". Any of the photos you see on the web I could have sent to you COD in what ever size that you might want. we are working on a price list and it will be available on line, in the not to distant future. A part of the money will go to help what few Nubas that are still left.
